Happy September Friends

Ayurveda teaches that we are made of the food that we eat. With a weak or faulty digestion, we lack the ability of complete digestion.
The Sanskrit word for this is ama.
The literal translation of ama is undigested, raw, unbaked, or uncooked food material. Ama becomes the toxins and catalysts that are the root of the disease process.

“The Body is the product of food.
Disease occurs as a result of faulty nutrition.
The distinction between pleasure (health) and pain(disease) arises as the result of the difference between the wholesome and unwholesome diet”.

Sutra 25:29 of the Charaka Samhita

In Ayurveda, the idea of food and digestion expands beyond proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The Ayurvedic approach to nutrition includes information and impressions taken in through all five senses. When we have weak digestion it is hard for us to digest food but also to digest and assimilate the happenings in our lives, our thoughts and our relationships. There are mental factors that can cause ama like anger, jealousy, grief, greed, and fear. Eating a proper amount of wholesome food while upset will result in ama in our bodies.

Our amazing bodies are always trying to talk to us, communicate needs and lead us to any imbalance that may be present. Here are several indicators of ama in our bodies and minds:

  • White coating on the tongue

  • Heaviness or lethargy

  • Irregular or reduced appetite

  • Generalized body and joint pains (often noticed the day after eating heavy foods: meat, cheeses, desserts or fried foods)

  • Skin is dull and lusterless with blemishes, acne and such

  • Bloated stomach, flatulence, belching

  • Metallic taste in the mouth

  • Foul smelling breath and sweat

  • Constipation

  • Foul smelling stools which may be sticky, heavy and sink.

  • Lack of mental clarity, energy or brain fog

  • A sense of heaviness in the abdomen, legs or throughout the entire body

  • Weary and unenthusiastic feeling

  • Blocked feeling anywhere in the body, including constipation, sinus congestion and difficulty in breathing

  • Waking up tired even after a good night’s sleep or being unable to have a good nights sleep

If you find yourself with any or, hopefully not, all of these symptoms, this is your body telling you that some things need to change.
