Getting Curious in 2025
“Be curious, not judgmental.”
-Walt Whitman.
One of my personal goals in 2024 was to remain more curious. Because I carry a lot of fire in my constitution, I can find myself becoming judgmental and jumping to conclusions when I am in a state of imbalance.
Years ago, I was taught to replace a moment of judging myself, a situation, or another person with the phrase, “isn’t that interesting”. This keeps me in the space of curiosity rather than judgment.
There are many benefits of remaining curious. One of the biggest that will save yourself and others around you much angst and frustration is not making assumptions. This alone is with its weight in gold. When we create stories in our minds filtered through the lens of our past experiences and not the actual truth of what is happening, we lose the opportunity to see our present moment with fresh eyes. You may say, “Then what if I am burned twice because I didn’t assume?” If you remain curious, it will improve discernment.
Curiosity improves your conversational skills while cultivating positive relationships. When we remain curious, we will never get bored, and curiosity can enhance overall satisfaction, self-discovery, and personal growth. When you explore and satisfy your curiosity, your brain floods your body with dopamine, which makes you feel happier. Yay! It is one of the most common traits of an intelligent mind. Intelligent people let themselves become fascinated by things others take for granted. Their minds fill with probing questions about the world around them, which can show a genuine interest in understanding and learning about others. That’s sexy.
One of the niyamas or observations in yoga is Svadhyaya, which translates to self-study. I use remaining curious as a form of svadhyaya. I observe my mind, reactions, or responses to circumstances, conversations, the world stage, relationships, etc. When I can remain curious, I have a much better chance of staying in my heart and remaining in peace. Which, in the end, is very important for my soul's journey. I invite you to be curious with me in 2025. We can create space for a more peaceful experience by dropping assumptions and keeping our hearts open.
