Fig, Date, Rosewater & Cardamom Almond Milk Shake

"A fig for a care!  A fig for a woe!" -John Heywood

It is getting hot here in Phoenix and the summer harvest is beginning. Tyler is revitalizing the soil in the garden beds so we don't have our usual bounty.

We do have figs!
Well sort of, I should say we are battling the birds for the figs.

I don't have a problem sharing some of the figs, but they don't want to share any with us. I have been able to steal a few away from them to create a delicious drink for you to enjoy.

INGREDIENTS

Homemade Nut Milk

  • 1 cup almonds, soaked overnight and peeled

  • 1/2 cup cashews, soaked overnight

  • 1/2 cup macadamia nuts, soaked overnight

  • 2 dates seed removed

  • a pinch of Himalayan salt

  • 4 cups purified water

    DIRECTIONS

  • Place ingredients in a blender with 2 cups of water, blend until smooth.

  • Add the other 2 cups to thin.

  • If too grainy squeeze the liquid through a nut bag to remove any unwanted pulp.

For the Shake

  • 2 cups of nut milk

  • 4 fresh ripe figs quartered

  • 2 dates

  • 3 teaspoons of rosewater

  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom

    DIRECTIONS

  • Place all ingredients in a blender to liquefy.

*Other options are to finish with a hint of fresh ground nutmeg or perhaps place 3-4 strands of saffron in the shake.

Here are some of the benefits of this yummy little treat:

Let’s start with almonds. If you are a nut milk drinker, first off I would like to encourage, request, maybe even implore you to make your own nut milk. As you can see it is really easy and much better for you as it has no binding agents or preservatives. You know exactly what is in it and the quality of the ingredients. Not only that you can infuse it with your own loving energy. God knows if the person that is making your nut milk has had a bad day and is infusing your milk with grumpiness. OK enough woo-woo stuff. Just trust me and make your own milk. It will just taste better.

Here you go the magical mystical almond:

First off, they help to balance PH in an overly acidic body, which is a big problem here in the west. They also help to calm the nervous system and aid in digestion. Almonds naturally lower cholesterol and help to prevent cancer. High in vitamin E with a good amount of magnesium, almonds help to strengthen the nervous system, the bones and the reproductive system. Lastly, according to Ayurveda, almonds are Sattvic which means they help to create a sense of harmony and clarity in the mind and body.

Figs:

These tasty little treats contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, up to 50 times more bioflavonoids than other fruits and they soothe the lungs and can help to treat asthma. Figs are helpful for a dry cough and can be used as a mild laxative. The dates in this delicious drink support the liver, spleen, and lungs. They are anti-aging and help with weakness. The rosewater will cool the system during the hot summer days and the cardamom will help to circulate your vital life energy.
